The Kingdom Hotel Victoria Falls also has a beautiful pool area with two swimming pools, a pool terrace with one of the resort’s many bars.

A great deal of attention has been paid to the smaller details such as the cast iron ‘seed-pod’ bar and the hand sculpted statues on the lawn – all adding to that ‘magical kingdom’ effect.

The hotel has 294 rooms which are situated in separate two and three storey units, built around the large water feature lake. The rooms are bright and spacious and decorated to match the African theme. The newer wing called the Kings Club is a refurbished section of the hotel, but offers more services to guests. Additions such as complimentary airport transfers, a personal hostess throughout your stay, a bottle of wine and complimentary hand massage, gives an extra special experience as a guest of the
Kings Club.

All the rooms have balconies and some of them overlook the lake, while the other’s overlook the property’s gardens.

Many of the rooms have extra bunk beds for families and there are two twin bedded paraplegic rooms.

There are also four suites each with a separate lounge and extra bedroom, as well as a mini bar.

N1 Hotel Victoria Falls

Comfortable budget accommodation in a bustling part of town only 1.1kms from the Victoria Falls

The N1 Hotel was established in 2010 for clean and affordable accommodation in Victoria Falls. Refurbished in late 2015, the hotel has a fresh look and now caters for both budget travellers and campers. Its location is within easy walking distance of one of the 7 wonders of the world on one side, and the town centre on the other side. It is adjacent to one of the curio markets, and a stones throw from the Elephant’s Walk Shopping Centre, which has upmarket curios shops and some nice restaurants. It is only 1.1km distance from the Victoria Falls rainforest entrance, so it is perfectly positioned.

The hotel is typical of a budget hotel with minimal amenities in order to keep the prices low but there are tea and coffee making facilities in each room. All rooms have double beds – twin rooms are still to be added. The bathrooms are smart and have a shower and washbasin only. The superior room has the most space and the bathroom has a washbasin and both a tub and shower.

The new campsite at N1 Hotel offers campers a pleasant experience on soft green manicured lawns, with lighting, power sockets and a small barbecue grill at each point. The entertainment area of the hotel is located on the campsite grounds. There, campers and hotel guests can relax and watch television, cool off in the sparkling swimming pool, or have a braai on the larger grill next to the pool. The ablution facilities are clean, with showers and shaving sockets in the men’s block. The campsite is wheelchair friendly.

Our Opinion

The N1 Hotel is located in a very central area close to town and only 1 km from the Victoria Falls entrance so everything is with easy walking distance. The accommodation is very reasonably priced and is typical of a budget hotel (nothing fancy). It is very clean and comfortable. It is ideal for those who feel that they are going to be out most of the day and therefore don’t want to splash out on pricey accommodation but still want a clean and comfortable bed at night. Having said that it does have a nice garden and pool area close to the campsite. Great Value!

The N1 campsite is a great new addition to Victoria Falls town with lovely green lawns and a sparkling pool with comfortable entertainment area and Barbeque stands for cooking (Hotel guests can utilise this area). The Hotel has limited restaurant facilities and only provides breakfast but a host of good restaurants are with easy walking distance such as the Africa Cafe, Three Monkeys and Nam Took which are all near the hotel, or the ones a little further such as Ilala Lodge’s The Palm, the various eating places at the Victoria Falls Hotel or Kingdom Hotel, the Shearwater Cafe, Lola’s Tapas & Bar or Mama Africa Eating House. Other Victoria Falls Restaurants are a great option, and for alternative dining options, contact us.

The Victoria Falls Hotel

Colonial Grandeur and Old World Charm…

The Victoria Falls Hotel was built in 1904, at the time when the Cape to Cairo Railway line first reached Victoria Falls, this classic and colonial hotel has been established for over 100 years. Visiting members of Royal families, international and local statesmen as well as celebrities have chosen to stay at The Victoria Falls Hotel.

The Victoria Falls Hotel has a prime position, with views overlooking the Victoria Falls Bridge……

Being the first hotel to be built it has prime position, with views overlooking the magnificent Victoria Falls Bridge and gorge below.

It has it own private pathway down to the Victoria Falls Rainforest entrance and is also situated within walking distance of the town centre.

It is steeped in history…..

The Victoria Falls Hotel has an atmosphere steeped in history. The old fashioned and traditional décor throughout the hotel is full of colonial grandeur and old world charm.

The manicured gardens and beautiful buildings together with the courtyard filled with lily ponds in the middle of the hotel gives a feeling of tranquillity and sheer relaxation.

Some of the deluxe rooms and suites offer breathtaking views across the Victoria Falls Bridge and Zambezi River Gorge, but not all of them, so if a view is important to you make sure you book through an agent who knows the hotel well (like us for instance). We can try to get the best rooms for you when possible, booking quite well in advance is essential for this.

Another word of caution here is that the standard rooms although still pricey don’t have particularly nice out looks and are quite small.

Royal Livingstone Hotel

A beautiful 5 star hotel fashioned to take you back to the 1800’s

The Royal Livingstone Hotel was built on the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls and opened in 2001. This former Sun International hotel was built from scratch right beside the Zambezi River. If you are familiar with the colonial style of architecture, you will greatly appreciate the design of this magnificent accommodation option. You will find ceiling fans in all areas of the hotel, beautiful artefacts, paintings and drawings from the Livingstone era.

This 5 star establishment is on the Mosi oa Tunya Road, a 1.4km drive or walk from the Victoria Falls themselves. Of-course the view of the Victoria Falls from the Zambian side is quite different from that on the Zimbabwean side. Shuttle service to and from the falls is available at the hotel.

From the Royal Livingstone Hotel reception you can immediately see the Zambezi River across the rolling lawns. There are 173 rooms at the Royal Livingstone Hotel.
All of the spacious rooms have en-suite bathrooms and a private veranda. They do face the Zambezi River although not all of them will have the view because of trees in front of buildings. Located near the reception is the business centre where guests can use computers with internet, although wireless internet is available all around the premises.

The restaurant, lounge area and bar face the magnificent Zambezi River so guests can lounge with an awesome view. In front of the lounge also is the swimming pool with sun beds, rolling evergreen lawn and the decks. These decks are wonderful and guests can enjoy drinks and meals while watching the river flow by. The never ending rising spray from the falls less than a kilometre downstream is clearly visible from these decks.

Guests at the Royal Livingstone are welcome to treat themselves in the health spa in the main area of the hotel, and in the gazebos near the river bank, as well as the gym. It is expensive to stay at this luxury hotel but then it is a beautiful and opulent 5 star hotel and is therefore suited to guests who are more concerned about the quality of their accommodation than the price.

Tongabezi Lodge

A wonderfully romantic African getaway nestled on the banks of the Zambezi River, Tongabezi Lodge offers you a variety of houses to choose from, each with is own unique charm

Situated in a dense forest on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River is a truly romantic treasure called Tongabezi Lodge. This exclusive lodge is located 18km upstream from the Victoria Falls on the Zambian side of the border. To get there, guests can arrange road transfer from Victoria Falls Airport (Zimbabwe), Kasane Airport (Botswana), Livingstone Airport (Zambia) or the Zambia-Zimbabwe Border. It is also near the Mosi oa Tunya National Park.

Guests at Tongabezi Lodge will feel well at home in a variety of accommodation options available there. The first of the rooms at Tongabezi is the Honeymoon House which has an open plan and direct view of the river. The house is complete with a private veranda with sun beds and a private garden. The Bird House also has an open plan and veranda with a deck for private dining. It is unique with a sunken bath perfect for winding down after a day of activities. A more secluded lodging which has its own hidden path is the Tree House. It literally feels like you are living within the Ebony tree which it is built around. Its open plan lets you experience the surroundings and the Zambezi River without you having to even leave your bed. It is slightly more enclosed and has a private deck closer to the river where you can enjoy sundowners or an intimate dinner. At the far end of the lodge is the Dog House where you are guaranteed views from every space in and around the house. The Dog House is one of the larger ones with a separate lounge and bar, and has large glass windows instead of walls. It is unique in that guests have their own private vehicle with a guide and a boat. On the other end of Tongabezi Lodge is the Nut House which is elevated on the Zambezi River bank. This house is enclosed with walls that let in light from every direction. It also has its own beautifully sparkling plunge pool out on the deck. Then there is the Garden House – ideal for a family lodging with a double room, master bedroom and lounge with dining room. The Garden House is home away from home, complete with a large green garden, a swimming pool. This house is not river-facing and is more private and safe so that the kids do not go to the river banks unattended. For guests who prefer a more normal lodging with closed fronts, there are five River Cottages which all have decks with sun beds to enjoy the view of the river.

The main communal building of Tongabezi Lodge is open-sided, facing the river with dining area with long table and lounge area. Dining is al fresco on the deck, in the dining area, or in private dining spots scattered around the lodge. Another shared area is The Lookout – a two storey open-fronted structure built on the deck right over the edge of the river. This is where guests can use the computers with internet, lounge and take in the view, or have a dinner party.

At Tongabezi Lodge, guests will experience real pampering in the bush. Besides the luxurious accommodation, there is a private valet who will take care of all your dining, activities and making sure that your stay is as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. The lodge also offers a “San Pan” candle-lit dinner on a large wooden platform right in the middle of the Zambezi River, with your own waiter to tend to your meal. Spoil yourself at Tongabezi’s health spa which offers massages, reflexology and Shiatsu.

Other activities offered at Tongabezi Lodge include river cruises, canoe excursions, trips to the Victoria Falls, fishing trips, game drives, nature walks, shopping and cultural excursions. The lodge founded a school which it continues to support through its work at the lodge and contributions made by the guests of the lodge over the years. The lodge continues to support the community by employing mostly Zambian nationals, which also gives guests a taste of Zambian hospitality.

Tongabezi Lodge puts emphasis on romance, relaxation and rejuvenation. There aren’t very many animals in that particular area although you may get visits from hippo or elephants at the lodge. However, the Mosi oa Tunya National Park is close by and you may see animals during your game drive. Also, the price of staying at Tongabezi is on the high end, but you get real value for you money with all that is included in the rates.

Victoria Falls Waterfront Lodge

Clean and comfortable, medium budget accommodation with a variety of options from camping to executive suites, right on the banks of the Zambezi River

On the Zambian side of the Zambezi River, about 4km upstream of the Victoria Falls, the largest waterfall in the world, is the Victoria Falls Waterfront Lodge. This reasonably priced lodge with a range of accommodation options is built on the banks of the Zambezi River and has lovely views of Siloka Island. The Waterfront Lodge is only 9kms by road from the Falls and 5kms from Livingstone town. Transfers can easily be arranged between the lodge and Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) or Livingstone Airport, taxis are also readily available.

There are a few accommodation options at Waterfront Lodge which include, camping and tents, standard, riverside, executive and family thatched chalets. All the family and executive rooms are on the upper floor while the standard and riverside rooms are on the ground level. Riverside and executive rooms have views of the Zambezi River while the rest have views of the gardens. At the back of the property is the Adventure Village, designed for self-drive campers and over-landers. Guests in this area share simple and clean ablution facilities. The campsite and permanent tents have views of the gardens only.

The Waterfront Lodge boasts lush green gardens where some wild animals occasionally wander freely, so always keep a watchful eye out for hippos, monkeys and other animals.

The large central dining and bar area of the lodge offers lovely open views of the Zambezi River in a relaxed and friendly environment. Being such a great venue this is a popular spot for the locals and can on occasions get very festive.

To cool off in the hot summer months, guests can take a dip in the large swimming pool near the Adventure Village campsite or in the smaller plunge pool set on the raised deck by the main bar and dining area.

Our Opinion

The Waterfront Lodge is good accommodation at a reasonable price, and so is ideal for families and travellers on a medium budget. In its price range we highly rate this lodge. Its position on the banks of the river is very appealing and being not too far from either the Falls or Livingstone town, getting around by taxi or transfer is quite easy, however please note it’s not within normal walking distance of either.

The riverside and executive rooms have lovely views of the river and the overall standard of accommodation is clean and comfortable and in line with the price being charged.
The central dining and bar area is what makes the Waterfront Lodge a great choice with great views plus a friendly and vibrant atmosphere.

For self-drive and campers this is probably your best option in Livingstone, with nicely laid out campsites and clean ablutions, however it is set back from the river so only has garden views.

Waterberry Zambezi Lodge

A simple, intimate and charming lodge on the Zambezi River shoreline, far from the crowds but near enough to enjoy other activities offered in Livingstone and Victoria Falls

Waterberry Zambezi Lodge is a charming private lodge situated by the Zambezi River bank on the Zambian side of the river. Its location is on Old Constania Farm on Nakatindi Road, about 35km from the Victoria Falls park entrance on the Zambian side, and 30 minutes from Livingstone Town. Transfers are provided by the lodge to and from the Livingstone Airport.

Waterberry Zambezi Lodge has seven thatched cottages scattered within the complex with a main double storey lodge which faces the river. Each of the rooms has a name of a different bird and either faces the mighty Zambezi River or the small private lake at Waterberry Zambezi Lodge. The lake is home to various species of birds and wildlife including crocodiles and hippo. All rooms at the lodge have a private deck with wooden chairs and table, ideal for sundowners, relaxation, bird watching, or a private dinner which the lodge can arrange for guests.

Beautiful, luscious green lawns bring the lodge to life along with different animals and birds which can be spotted on the lodge grounds. Near the main lodge is a clear blue swimming pool with a small plunge pool safe for the younger guests. For relaxation in the main area of the complex, Waterberry Zambezi Lodge offers a floating deck with a view of the river, pontoons located right on the river banks, lounging on the terrace and lounge of the main lodge. Meals are simple, but a pleasure with a few dining options to choose from, from al fresco to picnics to bush dinners.

Guests are welcome to take a nature walk around the lodge and to the private lake. Other activities at the Waterberry Zambezi Lodge include half day fishing trips by boat with guides, fishing on the pontoon, all day and sunset boat cruises, picnics on the island on the Zambezi River, guided birding excursions, cultural visits to the nearby village, Livingstone Town tours, and tour of the largest waterfall in the world.

All in all, the Waterberry Zambezi Lodge is a great place for those who want to get away and not be too far out – it is not far from town, but not close enough to experience the hustle and bustle of Livingstone and Victoria Falls towns. On a Fully Inclusive basis, which is what most guests usually chose, the lodge offers plenty at a reasonable price. Guests may opt for the Bed and Breakfast rates which excludes activities and the other meals. Waterberry Zambezi Lodge staff is well versed in the area, activities and are there to offer advice whenever it is needed. Information booklets and an orientation are given when you get to the lodge.

Family vacations are ideal in this location, although safety is a bit of a concern since there is no fencing around the swimming pool, and animals (elephants, hippo, etc) do come and graze on the Waterberry Zambezi Lodge grounds. Be sure to bring comfortable shoes and clothes for excursions, and warm jackets especially for the early morning activities. Although there is electricity and a backup generator, you may want to bring a flash light and extra batteries as there are frequent power cuts in the area. In the summer months, loose clothing, lip balm, sun hats, sun screen, sun glasses and swimming attire are essential for your trip. The Zambezi is generally Malaria zone, so make sure you have taken preventative measures, and protect yourself with insect repellent and long sleeves in the evenings especially. Travel and health insurance is also a must.

Ngoma Safari Lodge

Intimate 5 star safari lodge within the Chobe Forest Reserve

Ngoma Safari Lodge is another Africa Albida Tourism gem, but one with a difference. The lodge, which opened in 2011, is community and privately owned and funded. This means that the people living in the area benefit in a variety of ways and locals are employed by the lodge.

The five star safari lodge is located in northern Botswana within the Chobe Forest Reserve on a small private concession, close to the Ngoma gate entrance of the Chobe National Park. Ngoma Safari Lodge is situated along the Chobe River, adjacent to the Caprivi floodplains, 55km from Kasane (a town in Botswana), 135km from the Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe), and 7km from the Namibian border.

The Ngoma Safari Lodge has eight luxury suites in total, two of which are triples. Each room has 2 three-quarter size beds, which can be converted into a king-sized bed. The triples have an Indian day bed, which sleep one additional guest. All rooms are en-suite, and have a private outdoor shower as well. Each suite is equipped with a ceiling fan, air conditioning, mosquito nets, a mini-bar and a safe.

From each of the bedrooms and the private patio, which is on the outside of each luxury suite, there are breath-taking views of the plains and the Chobe River where you are likely to see groups of zebras, elephants, kudu, impala, sable, buffalo and other animals. Each suite has also has a private plunge pool.

In the common main area of Ngoma Safari Lodge, you will find the reception, as well as the dining room, sitting room and bar. Out on the deck, also with a splendid view of the plains and the river, is a plunge pool and separate seating area.

Activities to be enjoyed at Ngoma Safari Lodge include bird watching, game walks (accompanied by an armed guide), game drives (day or night), river cruises on the Chobe, as well as picnic lunches and sundowners. Some game drives and walks including the night drives are conducted on its own private concession but many of the game drives take you into the Chobe National Park through the Ngoma gate entrance.

Our Opinion

This is a truly 5 star luxury lodge which has been well designed and built with all the latest modern comforts and features. Its elevated position on a ridge offers breath-taking views across the Chobe floodplains. Being located close to the Ngoma gate on the western side of the Chobe National park is, in our opinion, a massive advantage as this end of the park has far less tourists than the very busy area around Kasane where most of the hotels and lodges are situated. For clarity Chobe in the peak season is a popular and busy park, but this side of the park has less tourists so here you will be able to enjoy a game viewing experience without the barrage of other game viewing vehicles on day trips. Being a small intimate lodge means that at Ngoma Safari Lodge, you will get a more personalised safari experience unlike Chobe Game lodge for instance which is essentially a big hotel.

The outstanding elevated views across the flood plains allow for game viewing right from your comfy bed or your own private patio. On the plains there is resident game all year round, but in the peak game viewing season from July to October, as the water recedes from the floodplains, literally thousands of animals can be seen on the plains below you – a truly remarkable privilege and spectacle.

Despite the fact that this lodge is situated far from the maddening crowd, Ngoma Safari Lodge still has easy access via a good tar road from Kasane. This transfer takes about an hour which in itself is a game drive where I would be highly surprised if you did not see elephant and other species.

We would highly recommend staying at this lodge for the reasons we have given above.

Zambezi Queen

Moored on the northern banks of the Chobe River, the Zambezi Queen offers luxury sailing – traversing 25km of the river in unsurpassed elegance and comfort … a unique African river safari

Moving along the banks of the great Chobe River, Zambezi Queen is a 5-star, 42-metre long luxury houseboat offering unparalleled sophistication in one of the most remote locations on the planet. Best of all, as a guest on the vessel, you can enjoy a truly unique and adventurous river safari holiday while still being surrounded by complete comfort and elegance.

Each of the 14 suites on the vessel features air-conditioning and your own private balcony, where you can enjoy unobstructed views of the Chobe River and African landscape beyond. Wake up to the sight of an elephant drinking from the river, or watch a fish eagle take flight – all from the comfort of your own luxurious bed.

Unlike a land-based lodge, Zambezi Queen navigates roughly 25km of the Chobe River, allowing you to explore different vantage points and enjoy unparalleled game viewing. In fact, the banks of the Chobe River boast one of the densest populations of elephant on the African continent. The Chobe National Park on one side of the river is also home to a large number of buffalo, leopard and lion, along with a variety of antelope and abundant birdlife.

Built in the early 1990s, Zambezi Queen was first designed to carry guests on extended journeys from Katima Mulilo down the Chobe and Zambezi rivers and back. However, the sheer size of the vessel made navigating difficult, and shortly after her inception, Zambezi Queen ended up moored along the river bank, eventually becoming a floating hotel to visitors to the Caprivi Region of Namibia. In 2014, Zambezi Queen was grouped with her three Chobe Princesses to form the Zambezi Queen Collection, a stable of luxury houseboats that capture the true spirit and adventure of Africa.

All suites within the Zambezi Queen come with en-suite bathrooms (shower only) and full length sliding shutters for both privacy and protection from the sun. Hairdryers, toiletries, gowns and slippers are provided for your comfort, while electronic safes in each room are ideal for storing your valuables. All suites accommodate two adults, and two of the larger standard suites can take a maximum of three adults. Suites can be configured with either one double or two single beds.

Several environmentally friendly standards have been set on the
Zambezi Queen. They run the latest, most fuel efficient and lowest emission
generators during the day. After 22h00, the entire boat switches over to the
battery power through the night. Hot water is provided by a solar heating system
on-board the vessel and energy-saving lights are installed through the vessel.
All cleaning detergents and amenities on the houseboats are biodegradable, and
they use an eight-stage river water purification plant for water in showers,
taps and the pool. A water jet propulsion system replaces the conventional
propeller system causing no damage to the riverbed and/or fauna and flora.

A stay on-board Zambezi Queen is a different kind of safari. It’s the kind where you get to decide if you want to be up with the birds, or prefer to laze all morning watching game from the comfort of your bed. The itinerary is flexible so while there are a range of activities on offer, you can choose just how much you want to pack into your holiday or how relaxed you want to be. The houseboat offers 2 and 3 night itineraries, as well as 4 night sailing dates in October and December.

This 3 star quality Minor Hotel Group (ex Sun International) establishment is located a few minutes walk from the Royal Livingstone in The Falls Resort, and is also right next to the Zambezi River, although the view of the river from the hotel is minimal. The hotel is on the Mosi oa Tunya Road on the Zambian side, and it is a 500m walk from the Victoria Falls themselves. Shuttle service to and from the falls is available at the hotel, as well as golf carts between the hotel and the Royal Livingstone.

Guests have a pick of 212 en-suite rooms at Avani Victoria Falls
Resort. All of the rooms have a private balcony and after refurbishments in
2016, they are characterised by a mixture of African and a touch Mediterranean
influence, with bright colours in the suites and lighter colours in the standard
rooms. Bathrooms also hint at native patterns blended with northern designs.

The grounds are expansive with all the facilities guests would
need from the reception at the entrance which attends to guest services, gift
and curio shop and florist, to a very large swimming pool, banking facilities
with Barclays Bank, a clinic, Kamp Kwena Children’s Club with baby sitting
services. Guests at Avani are welcome to use some of the Royal Livingstone
facilities such as the gym and hair salon. Similar to the ones at the Royal Livingstone Hotel,
there are gazebos where guests can enjoy relaxing massages and rubs. The Falls Resort
keeps a few zebra, impala and giraffes which guests will definitely spot when
they walk around.

There are a few dining options at the hotel. Room service is
available for all guests; Little Squires is a steakhouse which is near the
activities centre; the Theatre of Food is the buffet restaurant near the pool
area; the Pool Grill and Bar are on the other side of the pool; At the edge of
the resort is Kingfisher Braai area which is a barbeque site available for
functions on request. Their Boma is located on the path between the Avani
and the Royal Livingstone Hotels. This is a traditional African restaurant with
plenty of entertainment, fire place and grill only opens for dinners. The
hotel’s suites have a dining area for private dining within the rooms.

The Avani Victoria Falls Resort is very family friendly and caters for all
types of guests. The location in relation to the Victoria Falls is most
advantageous, and guests at Avani can visit the falls as many times as they like
without paying the National Parks fees. For 3 star accommodations, staying this hotel is a bit pricey.
However, the convenience, facilities and services offered at the resort make up
for it.

Chobe Game Lodge

The only permanent Lodge situated inside the Chobe National Park

Being the only permanent lodge located within
the Chobe National Park in Botswana, Chobe Game Lodge has a distinct
edge over the many other lodges situated outside of the park. All the
other lodges are located together in the town of Kasane, but this lodge is on it’s own, surrounded by national park with stunning views
over the Chobe River and it’s flood plains which are traditionally
teaming with animals and birdlife.

It is a luxury lodge as is reflected in
the prices. Here you will be totally pampered, enjoy fantastic cuisine,
sleep in absolute luxury and have the safari experience of a lifetime.
It’s reputation speaks for itself, probably gaining initial notoriety
when Liz Taylor and Richard Burton got remarried here in the 1970’s. The
Moorish architecture and lush tranquil gardens at Chobe Game Lodge, I
must say do give it a
rather splendid feel.

It’s a large lodge accommodating up to 94 guests in 47 bedrooms so although
the staff are extremely hospitable friendly and accommodating it is not the same
intimate experience that one would have in an exclusive 20 bed safari camp, but
for some that is not what they want and prefer the luxury of a larger
established hotel.

As Chobe Game Lodge is right on the river they
can offer both land and water based activities. A choice of morning and
afternoon, drives and river cruise are all included in the price. Being
inside the park gives you more game viewing time than those lodges based outside the park.

Chobe National Park is famous for having the largest elephant
concentrations in Africa. In the dry season (July to October) not only do
these enormous herds of elephant gather but also large herds of buffalo congregate along the
Chobe River’s fertile flood plains which has the only water and
grazing in the area. Sightings of
giraffe, sable, roan antelope, painted dog, lion, red lechwe and puku are
also common to mention just a few.

During the green season (Dec to April) much of this
game disperses inland, natures way of allowing the floodplains to
restore themselves. However resident game is always present, just not in
the intense volume of the dry season. The green season has the advantage
of seeing hundreds of newly born plains game and an absolute profusion of plant

Accommodation prices at Chobe Game Lodge vary through out the year according to the seasons and the peak tourism
times. Green season rates literally being half the cost of the peak season.

Some trip advisor reviews rave about the game guides others say they are
appalling. My view on this is that Chobe Game Lodge is "a hotel in a game park". One of the
best game parks in Africa which teams with game in the dry season and the game
viewing therefore speaks for itself. Guiding here however I believe will not be
of the same standard as in a smaller exclusive safari camp, which offer a more
intense wildlife experience.

the main complex overlooking the Chobe River or on the grassy banks of

Chobe Princesses

Guests on the Chobe Princesses can expect a flexible and personalised safari experience on small but luxurious houseboat, enjoying 50km of the Chobe River with views of the African wild

With only a small number of guests per boat and no set itinerary or departure dates, staying in one of the three Chobe Princesses is like being on your very own luxury houseboat. The entire boat can also be booked exclusively, giving you your very own private villa on the water. As you drift down the Chobe River and spot incredible wildlife scenes, you’ll be able to completely relax in an intimate river safari experience.

Each houseboat has a minimum of three smaller “tender” boats for use on daily excursions that take your fancy: mark off over 450 bird species found in this wetland paradise, try your hand at landing a tiger fish, or capture Africa’s unique beauty on a photographic safari. Whatever you choose to do, your day trips will be personal and flexible because you’ll be sharing the tender boats with a small number of guests. Alternatively, simply laze on a deck chair with an ice-cold drink in hand as you soak up the tranquility that surrounds you.

Each cabin on board the Chobe Princesses is tastefully decorated in a contemporary style, and each has its own private view onto the ever-changing landscapes beyond. As you lie on your king-sized bed, spot an elephant grazing on the riverbank nearby, or see a fish eagle diving for its prey. On the upper entertainment deck, a spacious lounge and bar area encourages you to take time out while there’s also a plunge pool that’s perfect for a refreshing dip. After a day spent doing as you please, fall asleep with the calls of hyena or even a lion drifting through the open doors of your cabin.

As you lie in bed and drink in your striking surroundings, you’ll find it very hard to leave the comfort of your cabin on board one of our luxury Chobe Princess houseboats. Tasteful decor cleverly combines local flavour with contemporary design, and the overall focal point is the large sliding window that frames the changing African landscapes perfectly.

Two of the 18-metre Chobe Princesses contain four cabin suites, while the third is slightly larger with five suites. Each cabin sleeps two people – either in a king-sized bed, or in two single beds if you prefer. Along with air-conditioning, cabins are fitted with mosquito-proofed windows and en-suite bathrooms with a shower, toilet and basin. Luxurious toiletries are provided for your comfort, as well as insect
repellent for a peaceful night’s sleep. Hairdryers are available on request.

Head to the upper entertainment deck of your luxury houseboat and relax in the spacious lounge and bar, as you take time to simply sit back and soak up the scenery. This deck also has an open-air dining area where you can enjoy superb seasonal meals prepared by experienced chefs.

Want to cool off? Take a dip in the plunge pool before unwinding on a sun lounger with an ice-cold drink served all day from our bar. Our lounge area comes with oversized leather couches, tables and chairs that are the perfect place from which to enjoy a spot of game viewing or simply to spend time with family and friends. As night draws in, enjoy some unforgettable stargazing under a vast African sky.

A major feature of the Chobe National Park is the elephants, whose resident population is estimated to be over 120 000. You’ll also be able to see large herds of buffalo, and if you’re lucky, rare sightings like herds of Roan Antelope and Sable. Besides the land and water-based mammals, this is also a birdwatcher’s paradise and you can expect to encounter over 450 species.

Because the Chobe Princesses are smaller vessels, they traverse about 50km of the Chobe River, as opposed to the Zambezi Queen, which traverses a shorter distance of about 25 kilometres. This doesn’t mean that either one is a better or worse game viewing experience – it’s just that the pace at which you move is different. Each day, you’ll stop at different mooring spots in the afternoon where you’ll stay for the night.

Several environmentally friendly standards have been set on the
Chobe Princesses. They run the latest, most fuel efficient and lowest emission generators during the day. After 22h00, the entire boat switches over to the battery power through the night. Hot water is provided by a solar heating system on-board the vessel and energy-saving lights are installed through the vessel. All cleaning detergents and amenities on the houseboats are biodegradable, and they use an eight-stage river water purification plant for water in showers, taps and the pool. A water jet propulsion system replaces the conventional propeller system causing no damage to the riverbed and/or fauna and flora.

• No set itinerary or departure dates

tender boats for each houseboat

decorated cabins in contemporary style

above the beach, but they are pretty rudimentary. Prices are from around $15
per person, but we do not usually take advance bookings because we feel that
customers should take a look around before deciding to staying there.

The food at Shooting Star is to a good standard, using the superb local
produce to create a wide range of dishes, many of which are authentically
Zanzibarian. Seafood obviously predominates, but other alternatives are
All meals are taken in the main restaurant, generally most guests staying at
the lodge will pull a few tables together at dinner and get to telling safari
stories. More private romantic dinners for two can also be arranged.
We suggest that you just stay on a breakfast and dinner rate as it will leave
you free to take lunch out if you trip into Stonetown for the day.
The bar is well stocked with soft drinks, beers, South African wines and
international spirits at reasonable prices.

Shooting Star is definitely a nice option for people looking for this
kind of small, intimate lodge. The main detracting factors are the proximity
of the lodge to a couple of the larger, less sympathetic beach clubs along
the strand and the fact that there is no specialist dive facility at the
lodge. This is why Shooting Star gains such a relatively low rating in
comparison with its otherwise excellent standards.

Chumbe is a small forested island just a few kilometres
to the south of Zanzibar Stone town. It is at the center of a small marine
conservation area and is the site of a small and exclusive lodge.

There are just seven of these fabulously wierd
constructions, for a maximum of around 14 guests, so the island never feels
busy, even when full. The bandas are reasonably well spaced, although could
have been farther apart for our liking, but do nonetheless give a real feeling
of being out in the wilds. All of the rooms look out towards the sea and it
takes just thirty seconds to stroll from the comforts of your hammock to
feeling the warm tropical ocean lapping at your feet. We had a slight
preference for the last two bandas, which give a greater sense of privacy.
Built from palm thatch and other natural materials, these constructions have
a light, airy feel. All rooms are equipped with double or twin mattresses on
the floor of the mezzanine sleeping area, accessed by a ladder. Beds can be
made up as a double or two twins. There are self-contained bathrooms with hot
and cold water shower, large living rooms equipped with handmade furniture
and decorated with African art and colourful fabrics … and very comfortable

but not least, enjoy the classic Zanzibari cuisine – a delicious blend of
Arabian, Indian and African ingredients, specialising in seafood and tropical
fruits and always offering vegetarian choices. Dinner is often taken outside
under the clear and scintillating night skies, however, eating under the high
cathedral roof of the visitors’ centre is also an experience not to be
forgotten. Chumbe really is most special – it offers the warmest of welcomes,
the most soothing of ambiences, yet the guest is helping to protect this
ecologically important site.

Beach is a small guesthouse which is located out on its own on a long stretch
of classic palm-lined, white sand beach on the the North East coast of
Zanzibar Island. Just off-shore from the guesthouse is the world-famous
Mnemba Atoll, whose circling reef has some of the best diving in East Africa. Along the beach from us are palm-thatched
villages, where friendly local people live a traditional life dominated by
fishing. Matemwe really is close to the classical notion of paradise.

We have seventeen rooms at the guesthouse, all of which have ensuite
bathrooms and hot water. Sorry for the bad photo.
There are seven rooms on the front row, which are set back a little from the
beach for privacy. Next there are three rooms in a second group a little
further back. Finally there are another seven rooms which we have built 100
metres back from the beach which offer a glimpse of the sea and a cool breeze
though the night.
We try hard to make the rooms that little bit special and you will find
various of our "little touches" around the place.
All rooms have fans. There are also two rooms which we have fitted with
air-conditioning, but again this is not usually necessary as there is almost
always a sea breeze. Electricity is 230Vac, powered by generator, which we
usually run most of the day and through the night. Plugs are UK
3-rectangular-pin pattern.

lodge is centred around a single large open-sided space looking onto the
beach, which serves at the lounge, bar and restaurant. As one guest put it :
"This is the most chilled chill-out spot I have ever found". We
have books and games to entertain our guests who want to take a break from
the beach and sun.
As we are a little place far away from supermarkets we use a lot of fresh
products provided by people within the community. Our menus are small but
good and change daily for every meal. Favourites amongst our guests are the
grilled fillet of fish with a passion fruit sauce, chicken kebabs with a chilli
garlic dressing. We don’t neglect vegetarians either and our chef Salum will
CHART to you if you have any special needs.
The atmosphere at Matemwe is chilled and laid-back but this does not mean you
wait half an hour for a beer – our staff are friendly and attentive – as
another guest put it : "I wish we could take your smiles home with
The romantics amongst you will be left in peace but we often find ourselves
rearranging the tables at meal times as more and more new friends sit
together over a bottle or two of good South African red.
As some of our guests like to dive, snorkel, and explore the island we do not
offer a fullboard option which makes them feel tied to the hotel. However, as
we are on such an undeveloped part of the coast we do recommend that you book
for half-board as there are not that many dinner options.

of the main reasons for coming to Matemwe is for the world class diving at
Mnemba atoll.
We usually say that there is enough variety on Mnemba for about 4 to 5 days
worth of good diving, maybe 8 to 10 dives, although the reef is always ready
to spring a surprise or two.
Mnemba is a circular reef, with aquarium conditions on the inside and some
good wall-diving on the outer. Diving here is a year-round event, with
reasonably good conditions to be found on the atoll under almost all weather
conditions and visibilities of 20 to 40 metres are the norm. We regularly see
turtles and dolphins here and are often lucky enough to see (or even get a
tow from) whale sharks and pilot whales.
We have a full 5 star IDC PADI dive school at the lodge, which works in
conjunction with our dive office in Stonetown. We are able to offer the full
range of PADI certificate courses, as well as try dives and snorkelling trips
for the non-divers. For PADI open-water courses we are happy to take a
referral certificate from those of you who want to do the theory and pool
work before you come.

accommodation available is at Lake Natron Camp. The camp is small and

is a thatched bar and dining room under traditional style thatched grass.

The camp is an excellent base to explore the surrounding area and
from which to climb Oldoinyo L’Engai. The Camp will organize the
climb.  A very pleasant hike is up the Engare Sero gorge that cuts
into the rift valley escarpment; there are some lovely waterfalls in a grotto
and the stream is wonderful for bathing. The lake shore has a wonderful
variety of   bird life. Wildlife safaris of longer duration
than 10 days are hardly complete without a visit to Lake Natron.
Although not normally included on the northern Tanzania
wildlife safari tourist route, the Lake
Natron area has some of the most
spectacular scenery in East Africa. The
active volcano of Oldoinyo L’Engai is a challenging one day ascent.Oldoinyo
L’Engai (the Maasai’s Mountain
of God
) is the only
active carbonatite volcano in the world. It takes 3 to 4 hours to climb to
the top from where there are spectacular views of the rift valley and the
lake. The ascent is not easy: it is steep and there is no shade. Normally the
climb starts in the early hours of the morning. For
those that would like to have an extended hike, Lake Natron Camp will
organize a walk from Embakai in the
Ngorongoro Highlands down to Natron.
The hike takes two days, with an overnight basic fly camp near the Maasai village of Naiyobi.. There is a Maasai guide and
his assistant to help with the donkeys which carry provisions and camp
equipment. The walk is about six hours each day and covers 44 kms, descending
from 10,000 ft to 2,000 ft.
