Day 1: Arrival – Nairobi
Depart by overnight flight to Nairobi. Arrive meet and transfer to Nairobi Serena Hotel

Day 2: Nairobi/Amboseli National Park
Set off on safari this morning, driving south towards Amboseli, a park famous for its big game and superb views of snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro. After lunch and a chance to settle in, your afternoon is spent game viewing in this photogenic area. This evening, enjoy a special welcome dinner and safari briefing. Amboseli Serena Lodge B L D

Day 3: Amboseli National Park
Leaving your lodge early this morning, you have a full day of game viewing in this area. At dawn, all the animals are moving, making this the most exciting time to view wildlife. Watch for elephant, zebra and wildebeest along the saltpan trails. Swamps and springs form permanent watering places for the wildlife in times of drought. The middle of the day is at leisure to relax before setting off in the late afternoon for a game drive. This is an ideal time of day to see predators as they begin to stir from the shade and roam onto the plains in search of prey.
Amboseli Serena Lodge B L D

Day 4: Amboseli/Arusha, Tanzania/Lake Manyara National Park
Drive across the border into Tanzania, arriving in Arusha in time for lunch. Later, continue on to your next lodge, located in the Lake Manyara region. Lake Manyara, one of a chain of lakes in Africa’s Great Rift Valley, is nestled at the foot of a spectacular 2,000-foot escarpment decorated by magnificent forests of towering mahogany trees and giant figs. Lake Manyara Serena Lodge B L D

Day 5: Lake Manyara/Ngorongoro Crater
This morning, enjoy a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park. With its verdant foliage and variety of bird life, the park resembles a tropical rain-forest. At the conclusion of your game drive, continue by road to quaint Gibb’s Farm for a farm-fresh lunch. Afterward, continue on to one of the most magnificent wildlife arenas in all of Africa, the Ngorongoro Crater. Dinner/Overnight Ngorongoro Serena Lodge B L D

Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater
Drive down into the Ngorongoro Crater. The entire Conservation Area is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its geological and ecological importance. Up to 12 miles in diameter, the crater’s grass prairies are an ideal haven for animals, and you may see lion, elephant, hyena, wildebeest and gazelle. Even the rare and elusive black rhinoceros, one of Africa’s most endangered species, is a resident here. Following a picnic lunch in the crater, visit a Maasai Village to gain insight into this fascinating culture. Dinner/Overnight Ngorongoro Serena Lodge B L D

Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater/Serengeti National Park
This morning, drive to the vast Serengeti plains. On your way, stop at Olduvai Gorge where the Leakey family discovered many fossilized remnants of human ancestors. Descend to the gorge and enjoy a privately guided visit of this renowned archaeological site. From here, continue your drive into the arid and spectacular country of Serengeti National Park. Serengeti Serena Lodge B L D

Day 8: Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti’s breathtaking panorama of plains, rivers and rocky outcroppings reveal resident populations of wildlife. Spend your day on morning and afternoon safaris searching for large predators including lion, leopard, cheetah and their herbivorous prey. Serengeti Serena Lodge B L D

Day 9: Serengeti/Arusha/Nairobi/Masai Mara Game Reserve
Board your flights to the Masai Mara Game Reserve, Kenya’s finest wildlife spectacle. A vast expanse of the Serengeti plain rich in wildlife, the Masai Mara is the height of your safari.
Days 10: Masai Mara Game Reserve
Spend two days in the Mara, an essential part of the Serengeti ecosystem and the destination of the annual wildebeest migration. Your final evening in the Mara concludes with a special farewell dinner. You will also have an opportunity to visit and support a local primary school. Mara Intrepids Club B L D

Day 11: Masai Mara – Nairobi

16 Days and 15 Nights
Price: Please Contact us about the price of this Itinerary

DAY 1: Arrival – Tanzania
Arrive Tanzania, meet and assisted, then transfer to SG resort. Stay overnight.

DAY 2: Machame Gate (1490m) – Machame camp (2980m)
Hiking time: 7 hours | Distance: About 18 km’s | Habitat: Montane forest
After breakfast meet with your guide whom will brief and check your climbing gears, afterward drive to the Machame village (1490m). The guides and porters prepare and pack the supplies and your equipment in the village. You will receive a lunch pack and you can also buy mineral water in the village.

Depending on the condition of the road, it is possible to drive from the village to the Machame gate, but if not, the muddy 3 km walk will take about 1 hour to complete. After registering at the gate office, you start your ascent and enter the rain forest almost immediately.

There is a strong possibility of rain in the forest, which will transform the trail into a very soggy, muddy and slippery experience. You will have a welcome lunch stop about half way and will reach the Machame camping area in the late afternoon.

Your porters (arriving at the camp site long before you) will have erected your tent on your arrival. In the evening the porters will boil drinking and washing water and the cook will prepare dinner, before you retire to your tent for the night. Night temperatures can already drop to freezing point at this campsite.

DAY 3: Machame camp (2980m) – Shira camp (3840m)
Hiking time: 6 hours | Distance: About 9 km’s | Habitat: Moorland
You rise early at Machame camp and after breakfast you climb an hour or so to the top of the forest and then for 2 hours at a gentler gradient through the moorland zone. After a short lunch and rest, you continue up a rocky ridge onto the Shira plateau. By now you will be able to see in an easterly direction, the Western Breach with its stunning glaciers. You are now due west of Kibo and after a short hike you will reach the Shira campsite at 3840m. The porters will boil drinking and washing water, before serving dinner. The night at this exposed camp will even be colder than the previous night, with temperatures dropping to well below freezing.

DAY 4: Shira (3840m) – Lava Tower (4630m)-Barranco camp (3950m)
Hiking time: 7 hours | Distance: About 15 km’s | Habitat: Semi desert
The route now turns east into a semi desert and rocky landscape surrounding Lava Tower, where you reach an altitude of 4630m after about a 5 hours walk. Lunch is served in a designated area before ascending the rocky scree path to Lava Tower (4630m). Definitely, the toughest day so far.

It is normally around this point, where for the first time, some climbers will start to feel symptoms of breathlessness, irritability and headaches. After lunch you descent again by almost 680m to the Barranco camping area and after reaching the high altitude of 4600m at Lava Tower, the true acclimatisation benefit of this day becomes clear.

This descent to Barranco camp takes about 2 hours and offers great opportunities to take some beautiful photographs of the Western Breach and Breach Wall. The camp is situated in a valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall, which should provide you with a memorable sunset while you wait for the preparation of your dinner.

DAY 5: Barranco camp (3950m) – Barafu camp (4550m)
Hiking time: 7 hours | Distance: About 13 km’s | Habitat: Alpine desert
After spending a night at the Great Barranco Wall (a very imposing sight at first), you make your way up this awesome looking obstacle, which in the end normally turns out easier than what you anticipated.

Topping out just below the Heim Glacier, you now appreciate just how beautiful Kilimanjaro really is. The route then heads down through the Karanga Valley over intervening ridges and valleys, and then joins up with the Mweka route. This is the preferred route down from the summit, so remember it. Turn left up the ridge and after another hour or so, you reach Barafu Hut.

The last water stop on the route is the Karanga Valley, as there is no water at Barafu camp. Barafu is the Swahili word for “ice” and it is a bleak and inhospitable camping area to spend the night. Totally exposed to the ever-present gales the tents are pitched on a narrow, stony, and dangerous ridge. Make sure that you familiarize yourself with the terrain before dark to avoid any accidents.

The summit is now a further 1345m up and you will make the final ascent the same night. Prepare your equipment, ski stick and thermal clothing for your summit attempt. This should include the replacement of your headlamp and camera batteries and make sure you have a spare set available as well. To prevent freezing it will be wise to carry your water in a thermal flask. Go to bed at round about 19h00 and try to get some precious rest and sleep.

DAY 6: Summit attempt,
Barafu camp (4550m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m)-Mweka (3100m)
Hiking time: 8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak | 7/8 hours to descend to Mweka | Distance: About 7 km’s ascent – 23 km’s descent | Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit
You will rise around 23:30, and after some tea and biscuits you shuffle off into the night. You will head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This 6-hour walk to Stella point is for many climbers, mentally and physically the most challenging on the route.

At Stella Point (5685m) you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting). From Stella Point you will normally encounter snow all the way on your 2-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak.

The time you will spend on the summit will depend on the weather conditions. Do not stop here for too long, as it will be extremely difficult to start again due to cold and fatigue. Enjoy your accomplishment and a day to remember for the rest of your life. The walk back to Barafu from the summit, takes about 3 hours.

Here you will have a well earned but short rest and collect the rest of your gear, before heading down to Mweka hut (3100m). The route is not difficult and will take you down the rock and scree path into the moorland and eventually into the forest. The camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Dinner and washing water will be prepared.

DAY 7: Mweka camp (3100m) – Mweka Gate (1980m)
Hiking time: 3 hours | Distance: About 15 km’s | Habitat: Forest
After an early and well-deserved breakfast, it is a short 3-hour and scenic hike back to the Park gate. At Mweka gate you sign your name and details in a register.

This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those climbers who reached Stella Point (5685m) are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates. From the Mweka Gate you will continue down into the Mweka village, normally a muddy 3 km (1 hour) hike. You now drive back to Arusha for a long over due hot shower, dinner and celebrations!! Overnight at Kibo Palace hotel.

END OF KILIMANJARO TOUR

Day 8: Lake Manyara National Park:
After breakfast, transfer to Lake Manyara National Park via Arusha town. Lake Manyara is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Marvel at the variety of species, spoonbill, teal, pelican, kingfisher, hornbill and cormorant. In the tall trees, forest monkeys leap from branch to branch on the slope of the Great Rift escarpment, elephants stand in the shade of the baobab; and in the acacia woodland, lions lie draped along the branches of the umbrella trees Dinner and overnight at Lake Manyara Serena lodge, L,D

Day 9: Serengeti

Day 3: From Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut, 2.652 m.

From the Rwenzori Mountains National Park Head Quarter at Nyakalengija, 1.646 m., you will receive the briefing from RMS (Rwenzori Mountaineering Services) and UWA (Uganda Wildlife Authority), with the possibility of renting equipment. The hike starts through the plantations and homes of the Bakonjo, the people of the mountain, gradually reaching garden plots and elephants grass. You follow the Mobuku river, until crossing the Mahoma river. The trail passes through an open bracken fern slopes and Podorcarpus Forest, up to Nyabitaba Hut, 2.652 m., which is the arrival point for the day. This will take from 5 to 6 hours. From the location, you are facing on the North the Portal Peaks, 4.627 m., in front Mount Kyniangoma. During the day, you might see monkeys, the Rwenzori Turaco and hearing the chimpanzees.

Day 4: From Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Hut, 3.414 m.

From Nyabitaba Hut you cross the Kurt Shaffer Bridge, through a muddy area. Then the trail climbs up through the bamboo forest. You reach a steep rocky area, which leads to Nyamuleju Hut. This point marks the start of the giant lobelia and groundsel zone. The way proceeds through a bog full of typical plants along the Bujuku river. The final point is John Matte Hut, 3.414 m. for spending the night. From Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte it can take approximately 6 hours. You reach Bigo Hut and enter the upper Bigo bog, proceeding to Lake Bujuku, where it is starting the alpine Savannah zone of little vegetation. You finally arrive at Bujuku Hut, 3.962 m. This day hike can take up to 5 hours. There you have a view on the peaks of Mount Stanley, Mount Baker and Mount Speke. From Bujuku starts the diversion for whom intends to climb Mount Speke. You reach Upper Kitandara lake through thick mud to Lower Kitandara lake where is located Kitandara Hut, 4.023 m. Kitandara in the local language means “fresh field”, as a cold wind is blowing into the valley. Time to complete the hike about 5 hours. Location

The Rwenzori Mountains lie along the western border of Uganda and rise to a height of 5,100 meters. Here are the legendary ‘Mountains of the Moon’, a World Heritage Site – and these incomparable, beautiful, mist-shrouded peaks provide a unique backdrop to one of our most magnificent national parks.

In the centre of the range, which boasts Africa’s third highest mountain, some of the peaks carry permanent snow and glaciers, while the lower slopes are covered with dense forest. Walking trails on the lower slopes do not call for mountaineering experience, although the higher you go the fitter you need to be. Excellent walking routes, including the Bujuku circuit, are provided through wonderful and unique scenery. For those who want to attempt a climb, several peaks provide challenges that match those in the Alps. These fabled mist-covered “Mountains of the Moon,” 120 km in length and 48 km in width, were formed from a block which was thrust up during the creation of the western arm of the Great East African Rift Valley. At the centre of the range, there are six peaks carrying permanent snow, three with glaciers.

The highest of these peaks, and the third highest peak in Africa, is Mt. Margherita rising 5100 meters above sea level. The Rwenzori Mountains were gazetted as a National Park in 1991. The Park covers 996 square kilometres of rugged mountain terrain. Whether they are experienced climbers or casual day-hikers, Rwenzori Mountain National Park offers visitors a unique experience of an Afro-Montane rainforest.

The main attraction is the luxuriant vegetation found above 3000 m which includes the giant forms of Lobelia, Heather and Groundsel. Rwenzori Mountains National Park is also home to the hyrax, blue monkey, chimpanzee, giant forest hog and many unique bird species such as the Rwenzori turaco, the handsome francolin and the olive pigeon.

Gorilla Rules

A maximum number of 6 visitors may visit a group of habituated gorillas in a day. This minimizes behavioral disturbance to the gorillas and the risk of their exposure to human-borne diseases.

Please always keep your voices low. You will then also be able to observe the great bird life and other wildlife in the forest.

DO NOT leave rubbish in the park. Whatever you bring into the forest should be carried back out with you.

High Peaks Expeditions General Health Rules :

You will be taken to where the guides observed the gorillas the day before. From there you will follow the gorilla’s trail to find them. Look out for the gorilla’s nesting sites along the way!

i. When you approach the Gorillas, the guides will inform you when to get you cameras ready

ii. Always wash your hands before you head out to the gorillas.

When you are with the gorillas
iii. Keep a minimum of 5 meters (15 feet) from the gorillas. This is to protect them from catching human diseases
iv. You must stay in tight group when you are near the gorillas
v. Keep your voices down at all times. However, it is OK to ask the guide questions
vi. Do not eat or drink while you are near the gorillas. Eating or drinking inevitably will increase the risk of food/drink morsels/droplets falling, which could increase the risk of transmission of diseases

vii. Sometimes the gorillas charge. Follow the guides example-crouch down slowly, do not look the gorillas directly in the eyes and wait for the animals to pass. Do not try and take pictures and do not attempt to run away. Running away will increase the risk.

viii. Flash photography is not permitted! When taking pictures move slowly and carefully.

Do not touch the gorillas. They are wild animals. They might look cuddly but…….
The maximum time you can spend with the gorillas is one hour. However, if the gorillas become agitated or nervous, the guide will finish the visit early.

ix. After the visit keep your voices down until you are 200 meters from the gorillas.
Remember gorillas are very susceptible to human diseases. The following are ways to minimize the risk your visit might pose to them:

x. Respect the limits imposed on the number of visitors allowed with the gorillas each day. This minimizes the risk of disease transmission and stress to the group.
If you are feeling ill, or you are carrying a contagious disease, volunteer to stay behind. An alternate visit will be arranged for you, or you will be refunded your money.
If you feel the urge to cough or sneeze when you are near the gorillas, please turn your head away and cover your nose and mouth in order to minimize the spread of bacteria or viruses.
Always stay 5 meters (15 feet) away form the gorillas. The further back you are, the more relaxed the group will be.
Do not attempt to touch the gorillas.
Do not smoke, drink or eat when you are with the gorillas.
Do not leave any rubbish (eg. food wrappers) in the Park; foreign items can harbor diseases or other contaminants.

If you need to defecate, whilst in the forest, pleas ask the guide to dig you a hole with his panga. Make sure the hole is 30cms deep and fill it in when you are finished.

How you are contributing to the conservation of the Mountain Gorillas:
The mountain gorillas (Gorilla gorilla berengie), the world’s most endangered ape, is found only in small portions of protected afro montane forests in northwest Rwanda, southwest Uganda and eastern DRC. The mountain gorilla is one of many species unique to these forests. The forests are also home to many wonderful birds, primates, large mammals, reptiles, insects and plants and also ensure continued water and medical plant resources for the local communities.

The mountain gorillas are divided into two populations and current figures estimate the total population to be about 600 individuals. One population is found in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (BINP), in S.W. Uganda, covering about 330km2, and the ecologically homogenous (salem flora and fauna), covering three contiguous National Parks in three countries.; Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, Volcano National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo, covering an approximate total area of 300km2.

The threats to the remaining gorilla population and its habitat are many. One of these threats is the possibility of disease transmission form humans to gorillas and vice versa. In order to address the issue of potential disease transmission to the gorillas and to mitigate

Behavioral disturbances to this fragile population, the gorilla rules have been developed.

By following these rules and through the purchase of the permit, YOU too are contributing to the conservation of the mountain gorilla. Uganda Wildlife Authority uses the funds generated from the sale of this permit for the management of the National Parks. A percentage of the funds raised from Park entrance fees are also donated to local communities living adjacent to the parks to contribute to their development and improve natural resource management in the region.

Important: Before you travel please check your Tour Voucher and Arrival Information for the latest joining instructions. This will be sent to you upon receipt of final payment.

All itineraries are subject to change without prior notice.

Details: Situated in the magnificent Quirimbas Archipelago, scuba diving at Medjumbe is considered as some of the best in the world.

Reefs surrounding Medjumbe Island

The coral reefs surrounding Medjumbe Island are one of Mozambique’s best kept secrets. Bordered by the Northern Mozambique coastline and the Mozambique Channel, these waters hold an astounding diversity of marine species and are all within close proximity to the resort. Dolphins are often encountered around the Island and to and from the dive sites. Humpback Whales on their annual migration are frequently sighted between August and October.

WATER TEMPERATURE
Water temperature is 30°C in summer and 26°C during winter.

SOUTHERN DIVE SITES

JOE’S RIDGE • Fringing Reef 9m -14m
The coral reef forms ridges interspersed with sandy patches. Here in the azure waters, you will find resident reef fish such as Sweetlips, Pufferfish, Angelfish and Triggerfish. Turtles will often make a stop on the way out to the deeper waters.

SHALLOW HAL’S • Fringing Reef 8m- 12m
The shallow waters clearly show the true colours of the corals and the reef fish that inhabit the area. Ornate structures and formations in the coral rocks are frequented by juvenile fish species seeking sanctuary from the open sea. Anemones filter the waters and their resident “Nemo’s” never stray far from home.

SITA’S SHALLOW • Coral Bank 10m – 18m
Three small coral banks lie in close proximity to each other. Rising from a sandy base, this site is predominantly made up of varied hard corals. Schooling fish species gather across the reef.

DUSKY PINNACLE • Coral Bank 8m-15m
A small coral mound with gradual sloping edges is easily circumnavigated in a single dive. The hard coral forms archways and chimneys which give this site its name. In the small sandy areas amongst the reef you may come across Fantailed Stingrays, camouflaged Crocodilefish, Scorpionfish and Lionfish.

NEPTUNE’S NURSERY • Coral Bank 8m-15m
This hard coral reef offers shelter for a wide variety of fish species and a hunting ground for game fish. The site is relatively even with hard coral producing intricate formations to explore. Schools of Fusiliers, small Snappers and juvenile Sweetlips, Moray Eels and Blue Spotted Stingrays. Unusual Ribbon Eels and flamboyant Nudibranchs in every design and color!

QUARMBY REEF • Coral Bank 16m
Intermediate An extensive coral plateau. Soft coral varieties predominate the area in a wide array of color and texture. Vibrant Angelfish, Butterflyfish and Anthias. Larger species of Kingfish, Barracuda and Jobfish pass by overhead searching for food or a quick stop at one of the “Cleaning Stations”. Nudibranchs and Mantis Shrimp.

NORTHERN SITES

SAMBI SAMBI • Sloping Wall 10-40m+ Intermediate
The top of this reef is exposed on low tides while the eastern side slants down dramatically to over 80m. Lettuce leaf and other hard corals cover the slope. Napoleon Wrasse and Chinese Grouper. Graceful and shy Leopard Sharks, Green and Hawksbill turtles.

ROCHA ROCKS • Sloping Wall 12-30m
Intermediate On the southern end of Sambi Sambi, the sloping wall becomes uneven creating gullies and large coral mounds. Numerous species of Grouper, Napoleon Wrasse, Snappers and Unicornfish. Smaller fish species make a colorful addition to the top of the reef and common Octopus are often an entertaining encounter.

THE EDGE OF REASON • Vertical Wall 15-25m+ Advanced
Along the edge of the southern wall that forms the “Medjumbe Passage” divers can experience the feeling of flight as the wall gives way to the deep blue waters beyond. The top ledge lies between 15m and 24m and runs east to west.

CLIFFS OF INSANITY • Vertical Wall 24-40m+ Advanced
Overhangs and ledges rich in sea life present the diver with a stunning array of colorful coral species while Caverns and Crevices encrusted with hard and soft corals are dazzling and dive torches are recommended. Gigantic Sea Fans, Moray Eels, Lionfish and Angelfishes. Large Game Fish such as Barracuda and Dog Tooth Tuna.

MEDJUMBE PASSAGE • Vertical Wall 18-40m+ Advanced
North of Medjumbe Island lies a deep (800m+) and wide (7km) channel called the “Medjumbe Passage”. This channel is flanked on the south side by a vertical wall which plunges from 16m into the abyss below. This wall also features numerous overhangs and ledges for the diver to explore. Grouper and schools of Sweetlips. Giant Gorgonians filter the rich waters from the side of the wall and out into the blue larger species such as Napoleon Wrasse, Turtles and Sharks. This is definitely “World Class” and rivals any wall dive on the continent,

THE FAR SIDE • Sloping Wall 9-23m
All Levels Across the Medjumbe Passage a large fringing reef. The top is exposed at low tide. Unspoiled hard coral species The wall slopes from 9m down to 23m. Outcrops and Overhangs. Hawksbill and Green Turtles. Leaf Fish and other elusive species can also be found by those with a keen eye. The Far Side has a lot to offer!
