5 Days Climb Mount Meru
Trip Overview
Mount Meru is often ignored because of its proximity to Kilimanjaro, but it has much to offer to those looking for a challenging climb. Sleeping Volcano, which last erupted in 1910, is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain at 4,566 meters (14,979 feet). The climb takes only 3 or 4 days, perfect for those who want to taste the high-altitude hike without climbing too high before or after the safari or help with acclimatization if it happens before climbing Kilimanjaro. It is ideal for those looking for quiet hiking, and it should not be underestimated, as climbers still need to properly acclimatize to reach their peak. An armed park ranger will join the team to guard against any animal threats as
you start approaching Arusha National Park along the Momella route. Keep your eyes open and you will expect to see baboons, giraffes, zebras, colobus monkeys, and various birds. From here you will start climbing through the diverse plant zones of Meru from mountain forests, swamps, semi-deserts, and alpine deserts until you reach its magnificent crater. Go around the edge of the crater to reach its top, the Socialist peak at an altitude of 4566 m, after which you will have time to explore the ash cone that formed in the crater during the 1910 eruption.

Itinerary
Pick up from Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to Arusha.
Meals and overnight at Hotel/Lodge in Arusha (HB)
Day 2 :
Arusha/Miriakamba Huts
• Elevation: 4,921 ft to 8,250 ft
• Distance: 10 km
• Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
• Habitat: Rain Forest
We meet at your hotel in Arusha for a pre-climbing briefing with our office representative and
you’re then assigned Mountain guide, before boarding your waiting minivan and departing Arusha at 08h30 or so to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park for the necessary check-in and formalities before beginning your trek including packed lunches. The hiking trail begins in open grassland with an armed ranger as the possibility of seeing wildlife – giraffe, zebras, antelope, elephant, and buffalo – is high. We climb steadily through the rain forest until the reach Miriakamba Hut, situated in a grassy glade, where you will have dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3 :
Miriakamba Huts/Saddle Huts
• Elevation: 8,250 ft to 11,712 ft
• Distance: 8 km
• Hiking Time: 3-5 hours
• Habitat: Heath
After a leisurely breakfast, continue climbing through the rain forest until we enter the heath zone accompanied by giant heather and other moorland vegetation. Along the ridge of the saddle, we have views of Mount Meru Crater and the Ash Tray. After arriving at Saddle Hut, there is an option to hike to the top of Little Mount Meru for superb views and to further aid acclimatization with all meals and overnight stays. Meal Plan: B, L, D
Day 4 :
Saddle Huts/Summit

• Distance: 5 km
• Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
• Habitat: Alpine Desert
Summit to Miriakamba Huts
• Elevation: 14,977 ft to 8,250 ft
• Distance: 13 km
• Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
• Habitat: Heath
Very early in the morning (around midnight), we begin our climb to the summit. The trail is steep to Rhino Point and then Cobra Point. The path continues along the ridge of ash and rock to the summit - Socialist Peak. Here we enjoy magnificent views of Kilimanjaro and the sunrise before returning to Miria Kamba Huts with all meals and overnight stay. Meal Plan: B, L, D
