Elevation: 4,695 m to 5,895 m to 3,690 m
Distance: 4 km up, 14 km down
Hiking Time: 10-15 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert.
Wake up at midnight for a light breakfast and then get ready to climb to the top. As you will
climb to the top in the dark, you will need to have flashlights/flashlights. It will also be very
cold until you start going down, so you will need to have all your warm layers. This is an
important time to go slow (pole in Swahili). The goal is to climb before dawn so you can get
to Uhuru Peak shortly before or after sunrise. Turn up steep scree or possibly snow, and
reach Gilman Point at the edge of the crater at 5,861 m / 18,640 feet between 4 and 6 p.m.
At this point, you will see the legendary crater and its ice caps. Then after 2 hours of
walking through the crater of Kibo near the famous snow, you will lead to the real top of
Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak, where you will take pictures several times. After taking photos
from the top and viewing the view, go back down to Kibo’s huts, have lunch, relax, pack
your gear and continue down the saddle to Horombo Hut.
